What is Darakaraka?
The plain-language answer, straight from the Jaimini Sutras.
Darakaraka comes from two Sanskrit roots — Dara, meaning spouse or life partner, and Karaka, meaning significator. Put together, Darakaraka simply means "the planet that signifies your spouse."
It belongs to the Jaimini system of Vedic astrology, founded by Maharishi Jaimini, which reads planets differently from the more familiar Parashari method. Instead of Venus always representing "wife" and Jupiter always representing "husband," Jaimini astrology treats every planet as a movable, chart-specific significator called a Chara Karaka — and each person's Darakaraka is unique to their exact birth moment.
So when someone asks "what is Darakaraka" in the simplest possible terms: it's the one planet in your personal birth chart that carries the job of describing who you marry, how they think, how they look, and what your relationship will teach you.
Darakaraka, defined
The planet holding the lowest degree of longitude within its own zodiac sign, among the seven classical planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn. Rahu and Ketu are left out of this calculation, since they are shadow points, not physical planets.
Because degrees are measured to the exact minute and second of your birth, your Darakaraka planet is completely personal — it cannot be guessed from your Sun sign or Moon sign alone.
How to find Darakaraka in 4 steps
You don't need to be an astrologer to work this out — here's how the calculation actually happens, whether our tool does it instantly or you do it by hand.
Cast your birth chart
Your exact date, time, and place of birth are used to compute the precise degree of every planet at the moment you were born.
List the 7 planet degrees
Note where the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn sit — specifically their degree within their own sign, from 0° to 30°.
Drop Rahu & Ketu
The classical 7-karaka scheme excludes the lunar nodes, since they're mathematical points rather than physical bodies.
Take the lowest degree
Whichever of the seven planets holds the smallest degree value is your Darakaraka — your personal spouse-significator planet.

What each Darakaraka planet says about your spouse
Whichever of the seven planets lands as your Darakaraka becomes the lens for reading your partner's personality, profession, and — for two of the most-asked-about placements — even their physical appearance.
Sun Darakaraka
सूर्यYour spouse carries natural authority — confident, dignified, often from a respected family or a position of leadership. Expect a partner with a strong sense of self-respect and a magnetic, sometimes proud, presence.
Moon Darakaraka
चन्द्रA nurturing, emotionally intuitive spouse who values home and family deeply. They bring warmth and comfort, though moods may need patient, mature handling.
Mars Darakaraka
मंगलAn energetic, courageous, action-first partner — often drawn to sports, engineering, defence, or entrepreneurship. Decisions move fast in this marriage, for better and worse.
Mercury Darakaraka
बुधA sharp, witty, communicative spouse with a youthful mind and appearance. They keep the relationship intellectually alive, though restlessness can creep in if conversation stalls.
Jupiter Darakaraka
गुरुWidely considered one of the most auspicious placements — a wise, principled, well-educated partner who often becomes a guide or mentor figure within the marriage itself.
Venus Darakaraka
शुक्रA naturally favourable placement, since Venus already rules love and romance. Expect an attractive, artistic, harmony-seeking spouse — the key lesson is keeping the bond deeper than aesthetics alone.
Saturn Darakaraka
शनिAs Saturn as Darakaraka, your spouse tends to be mature, disciplined, and serious — often older in outlook, sometimes older in age. Marriage may arrive later in life, but what it builds is durable and loyal.
Two systems, one marriage story
Students often ask how Darakaraka differs from the 7th house — both point to marriage, but from two different branches of Vedic astrology.
The 7th House
- Shows the external, situational side of marriage
- Indicates timing and social circumstances of the wedding
- Fixed by your Ascendant — same framework for everyone
- The "container" of the relationship
Your Darakaraka Planet
- Shows the soul-level nature of your spouse
- Reveals personality, temperament, and appearance
- Calculated from your own unique planetary degrees
- The "character" inside the relationship

Saturn Darakaraka often brings a later marriage or a delay in meeting your partner, but the relationship tends to be exceptionally stable, loyal, and built on genuine commitment rather than fleeting attraction.
Jupiter and Venus are traditionally viewed as the most favourable Darakarakas — Jupiter for wisdom and protection, Venus for love and harmony. That said, any Darakaraka can bring a fulfilling marriage when well-placed and well-aspected.
No. The 7th lord is a Parashari concept tied to your Ascendant and shows the external circumstances of marriage. Darakaraka is a Jaimini concept tied to planetary degrees and reveals your spouse's actual nature.
No — your Darakaraka is fixed at the moment of birth and stays the same for life. Transits and dashas influence marriage timing, but the underlying significator planet never shifts.
